Oulton Park's signature Historic Gold Cup is back for three days of retro motorsport on 28-30 July, with a race line-up which has once again been refreshed slightly. We're now able to confirm the on-track bill, which includes six new additions in addition to several favourites from last year's running of the nostalgic summer showcase.
As has become traditional in the modern era, the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) will oversee the competitive action out on circuit, with four of its regular categories accompanied by a carefully curated selection of guest races. Additional content will come from the Historic Grand Prix Car Association (HGPCA), Historic Racing Drivers Club (HRDC), Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC) and Vintage Sports-Car Club (VSCC), which all return after joining the programme in 2022, in addition to Motor Racing Legends (MRL) which joins the line-up this summer.
In addition to updating the wheel-to-wheel offering, races at this year's event will once again be given special titles to celebrate the history of motor racing at the venue, with full details of these plus a breakdown of the weekend schedule to be announced very soon.
New for 2023
HSCC Thundersports
The HSCC's very own Thundersports series, previously known as Pre-80 Endurance, joins the Gold Cup programme this July with a line-up of sports-racing cars which competed in long-distance racing in the 1970s.
HSCC Historic Formula 3
Evocative Formula 3 'screamers' make a welcome return to the Gold Cup this year, with a field of classically-modelled single-seaters which raced across Europe between 1964 and 1970, an era in which Jackie Stewart and Emerson Fittipaldi came up through the category.
HSCC Historic Touring Cars
The HSCC's crowd-pleasing Historic Touring Car Championship returns to the Oulton Park Gold Cup programme this year with a field of pre-1966 tin tops, as raced in the British Saloon Car Championships earlier years.
MRL Historic Touring Car Challenge
(With Tony Dron Trophy and Sixties Touring Car Challenge
with U2TC)
Motor Racing Legends' flagship tin top offering will appear at this year's Gold Cup meeting with a focus on '70s and '80s touring cars. These machines will share a grid with the Sixties Touring Car Challenge and Under Two Litre Touring Cars featuring pre-1969 saloon cars.
MRL Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy and Stirling Moss Trophy
1950s sports cars will feature in Motor Racing Legends' dual-grid race for the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy and Stirling Moss Trophy. Pre-1955 cars will comprise the Woodcote section of the entry with late '50s models will battle for the Stirling Moss Trophy.
HRDC Gerry Marshall Trophy
Another exciting new tin top offering is the HRDC Gerry Marshall Trophy for pre-1983 Group 1 touring cars. This will be the series' first ever appearance at the picturesque Cheshire circuit.
Returning categories
Historic Grand Prix Cars Association
The Historic Grand Prix Car Association returns to the Gold Cup for a second year in succession following last year's two Historic Gold Cup races. Two races for Grand Prix cars from the pre-slicks-and-wings era of the sport, this will hark back to a time when the International Gold Cup was a regular non-championship fixture on the annual F1 schedule.
Historic Formula Junior
Two JHRA Formula Junior Championship races will take place on the Oulton Park International circuit across the weekend, returning to the meeting after appearing regularly over the years.
CSCC Special Saloons and Modsports
Fire-breathing Special Saloons and Modsports are coming back to the Gold Cup line-up for back-to-back appearances after making a popular debut in 2022.
HRDC Jack Sears Trophy
Named after the British Saloon Car Championship's (now BTCC) inaugural title winner, the Jack Sears Trophy is for tin top racing cars built and registered from 1958 until 1966. Run by the Historic Racing Drivers Club, this will feature crowd-pleasing Minis, Cortinas, Mustangs and much more.
Vintage Sports-Car Club
The VSCC will take visitors right back in time to the sport's earlier years with two grids at this year's event. Further details will be shared in due course.
