Oulton Park’s Historic Gold Cup returns for a special 70th anniversary edition next weekend (26-28 July). The Cheshire circuit’s signature event returns for three days of nostalgia on and off the track, including a retro race programme, classic car displays and additional celebrations.
The on-track show will once again be overseen by the Historic Sports Car Club, as it has been for many years now during the event’s modern era as a nostalgic showpiece. This includes several selected classes from the HSCC’s own catalogue, including Historic Formula 3 which will race for the headline Gold Cup this year.
Other highlights will include the powerful ‘70s single-seaters of the Derek Bell Trophy and the ever popular Historic Formula Junior category. Several guest race organisers will return too, including the Historic Grand Prix Car Association which will provide a sublime entry of classically modelled F1 machines from yesteryear.
Further on circuit content will be provided by Motor Racing Legends, the Cooper 500 Owners Association, Classic Sports Car Club, Vintage Sports-Car Club and Ferrari Club Classic, ensuring a wide range of racing machines from motor racing’s golden past will be seen on the picturesque circuit throughout the weekend.
The popular summer meeting is much more than just a race event however, holding a place as a key social fixture on the North West’s annual motoring calendar. And this year’s event will be no different with a sprawling off-track show filling the venue’s lush green infield.
Much of this will centre around special road cars, with a wide range of pre-2000 models flocking to the circuit to join the displays. Other more focused areas of the display will include a supercar display, a Youngtimer showcase, and the specially invited models taking part in the Cheshire Concours d’Esprit. The displays will stretch beyond cars too, with historic tractors, buses and steam engines all featuring.
This year’s event will also feature a special film premiere to celebrate the event’s seven decades as part of the returning Oulton Park exhibition in the paddock area. Other highlights of the exhibition will include memorabilia and artwork celebrating the history of the event and the circuit.
Another special element will be a celebration of the life and career of iconic Demon Tweeks founder and racer Alan Minshaw. This will take the form of a special display of his cars throughout the Gold Cup weekend. Minshaw, who died earlier this year, was a regular competitor in the North West and best known for his British Saloon Car Championship exploits in BMW and VW machinery emblazoned with his Demon Tweeks company logo.
Beyond all that there will be vintage music, traders and much more, giving fans plenty to enjoy.
